Simplicity

Why do we have such a knack for complicating things?

We were created complicated beings, with a complex interaction between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves.

Even so, we live lives that center on a handful of very basic things.

Eat.

Drink.

Sleep.

Read.

Write.

Talk.

Go to church.

And do all the things that enable the above things to happen.

Why then does life become so complicated?

Well, for starters, sin complicates everything. Sin is insanity, and brings in a complexity that God never meant to be there. {Not good.}

And secondly, we image God in our ability and role of taking dominion. {Thankfully, this is a good thing.}

However, it must still be reigned in, because wouldn’t you know, we aren’t God. {Remember the whole sleeping bit? }

We aren’t infinite, therefore we can’t take on infinite tasks, projects, and hobbies.

We have to narrow our niche, so to speak.

I can’t be all things to all people.

Encouragingly, neither could Jesus.

He had to choose how to spend his limited time.

He was “held back” by a human body as well.

He had to say goodbye to one town and all the people he hadn’t helped there to go start helping those in the next one.

He had to prioritize, had to say no, had to seek his Father’s guidance on what to fit in his days and what to let go of.

We are not failures because we can’t do everything.

We aren’t “missing out” if we don’t do everything.

We are missing out if we stretch ourselves so thinly that we can’t really live.

Can’t really focus on what’s most important in our lives.

Can’t enjoy our real lives.

It is possible to enjoy the things we are tasked with by our Father if we don’t burden ourselves with too many extras.

The answer isn’t always saying “no” either.

The answer is to find a balance.

To pray for wisdom and discernment.

To ask the Lord what he would have us give our best energy and time to.

And to let go of the rest.
